Ronny is the little kid who wants to be a big kid. He is surprisingly good. He can hit pretty far, he runs fast, he has a good arm, he can field, and pitch. A decent player, he sure isn't as young as he makes himself out to be. Nick Austria nailed his voice lines of him!

Backyard Baseball (also known as Backyard Baseball '97 for the Steam re-release) is a sports game for computer systems, released in 1997. It is the first installment edition in the Backyard Baseball series, and the first game published as a part of the Backyard Sports. The player can choose between "Spectator" mode (a simulated game between two generated teams of the backyard kids), "Batting Practice" (a mini-game in which the player can choose a player, and receive pitches from Mr. Clanky to practice batting), or a "Pick-Up Game." In a pick-up game, the player chooses between the seven fields available in the Pick-Up Window, and may also "create a team." The player then takes turn picking team members from a selection of some of the backyard kids, alternating with the CPU. The two teams play against each other on the selected field. In League Play, the player creates a team and picks nine players from the entire selection of the backyard kids, entering a team into the Backyard Baseball League (BBL). This league consists of eight teams created from custom team naming options, and a 14 season regular season. The teams with the best two records in the league at the end of the season are entered into the "BBL All-City Playoffs," which is a best-of-three series determining the team that will advance to the "Super Entire Nation Tournament." Upon winning this tournament, the player advances to the "Ultra Grand Championship of the Universe Series," which is a best-of-five series determining the overall world champion of Backyard Baseball. Winning this series beats the game and unlocks the "World Tour."

Vicki Kawaguchi (born November 5, nicknamed "Swan") is a character in the Backyard Sports series. Vicki was known as the ballerina. Vicki is shown to wear a pink tutu when she plays sports. In the first game, Vicki wore blue jeans under her tutu. The games after, she also has a shirt under her leotard. Vicki's personality hasn't been consistent over the years in the games. In the older games, Vicki showed a high interest for ballet and playing sports. She is a good player much like her brother Kenny. Vicki is displayed as a very sweet girl to anyone. Later on, Vicki's personality changed to not being interested in ballet anymore as she showed interest in the Japanese culture and mangas. She is also drawn her own manga before called Stealth Warriors in the book "Wild Pitch". Vicki's ballet classes really keep her reflexes sharp. With the best hands in the neighborhood, she is a good choice to play anywhere in the infield. Vicki's a little kid some big time speed. Hitting is not one of her strong points, but when she gets on base, watch out! In the field, all those years of ballet lessons show. She's quick to the ball and gloves them like a pro.

Reese Worthington (born May 25, nicknamed "Big Toe") is a recurring playable character in the Backyard Sports series. He is most known for being asthmatic. Reese, in older games, was known for being somewhat of a dork. He played the trombone, swallowed his retainer constantly, was allergic to grass, and had asthma. His hobbies include playing computer games and collecting stamps. In recent games, Reese is known for being a prankster. He got over his allergies and asthma, although he still runs slowly. Dmitri Petrovich (hypocritically), Ronny Dobbs, and Kimmy Eckman are known for hating him, just because he's a nerd. Reese also sticks up for himself and his friends. Reese was willing to give up his place in the tournaments during season play. This little guy has a small strike zone so pitchers have a hard time pitching to him. He doesn't like running too much though so you shouldn't put him in the field. At first glance, Reese looks more like a stamp collector than a baseball player; that's because he IS a stamp collector! Despite that, Reese has surprising athletic ability. Due to chronic 'asthmar' and grass allergies, however, don't expect a lot of innings from him. Reese's 1997 bio claims that he doesn't like running and that he shouldn't be put in the field. This is ironic as in that game running and fielding are his best stats.
