Lead singer Dan Reynolds, during the “Mercury – Act 2” Live Q&A, explained that “Waves” is about two of his close friends, one who passed away and another who took his own life, both within the past few years from the album’s release. The song is described as very heavy focusing on these two deaths and loss as a whole, yet also finding meaning in the celebration of life, remembering those who pass away for who they were, as those that loved you would not want you to be sad forever after they are gone.
